Three simple steps to secure your employer of choice status

Posted by in Asia, Commercial, Digital, Helen Soulsby

Sports and entertainment companies in Asia face stiff competition from other industries when it comes to attracting talent. Helen Soulsby, SRi’s managing partner for Asia, reveals the steps that can be taken to make sure that your business is the place that people want to choose. One of the idiosyncrasies of sports and entertainment in Asia is that, despite all the glamour that comes with working for a big sporting brand or entertainment property, more kudos still tends to lie with employment in other sectors – particularly technology and anything…read more

Can you afford to ignore Asia?

Posted by in Asia, Commercial, Helen Soulsby

Over the past 12 months, it has been impossible to avoid the sense that there is a shift in strategy underway in Asian sport. Take football as a case study; no longer is it just ageing players seeing out their twilight years in the Chinese Super League, this season saw Chelsea’s Ramires, Atletico Madrid’s Jackson Martinez and coveted Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder Alex Teixeira all head east for a combined £90m in transfer fees alone. It’s becoming increasingly clear, and perhaps alarmingly for internationally recognised clubs involved in the region, that…read more

Address your gender mix

Posted by in Career Advice, Helen Soulsby, HR, Management, Women in sport

It won’t come as a shock to many in the business of sport that the issue of gender diversity remains a very real concern, especially when it comes to the higher echelon roles. I chaired a recent Sports Leaders’ Breakfast discussion on this critical issue, which examined some of the challenges women in sport face in trying to climb the ladder into senior positions, what women can do to ensure their competitiveness, as well as highlighted the benefits that a healthy gender mix can bring to organisations. The current state…read more

How we can encourage more gender diversity at work

Posted by in Career Advice, Helen Soulsby, HR, Management, Women in sport

As today, March 8th, is International Women‘s Day, I wanted to share the following. Much of the content is from or inspired by Lean In, a book by Sheryl Sandberg, COO of Facebook and a woman widely lauded for re-booting feminism in the last few years. The book itself is worth a read (for both men and women) to understand the state of play in terms of “equality” in the workplace. To understand how we as managers and colleagues can encourage more gender diversity at work (both at SRi and…read more

In 2015, one thing became clear: China led the way in sports business growth across Asia. New entrants, new commercial arrangements and new investors flooded the broad sports business landscape. The China sports industry promises more growth in 2016 and the war for talent is getting fierce. Smart companies know that great people will give them the edge. Below we’ve briefly outlined six key trends (in no particular order) dominating recruitment within the Chinese sports industry. 1. Don’t they know who we are?

Posted by in Asia, Commercial, Helen Soulsby

Sports businesses in Asia have a problem. Unlike in the western world, companies operating in sports and entertainment aren’t the sexy brands that every Gen X and Millennial necessarily wants to work for. Sure there are exceptions, but often in Asia, sports focused businesses are just not the ‘employer of choice’. I’ll often ask a client, “Why should someone work for you? What does your brand/company have to offer?” I am then met with an incredulous look as they reply, “Why wouldn’t they want to work for us?” To this,…read more

Where are the women? Gender diversity in sports business.

Recently our Director, Asia, Helen Soulsby, spoke at the 2014 Asia Pacific World Sport and Women Conference in Australia on, ‘The State of Play – Female representation across the business of sport’. This is what she had to say: When I was a little girl, I didn’t want to work in sport (or in search for that matter). Believe it or not, I wanted to be a nail technician. Not really the career my parents were hoping for but they knew this was the first of many aspirations I would…read more

The Changing State of Play

Posted by in Asia, Helen Soulsby, Sponsorship

SRi has been on the ground in Singapore for five years, during which we have witnessed a significant shift in the state of play within the sports industry throughout Asia. When we launched in Singapore in 2009, our London head office had an enviable list of clients spread across the UK and Europe. Clients including some of the biggest names in sport; Manchester United, Lagardère Unlimited, Asics, Octagon, NBA, Liverpool FC, Women’s Tennis Association and ESPN. At the time we had little understanding of the commitment Singapore was making to the…read more

Building Regionally? What You Need to Know

Posted by in Asia, Commercial, Helen Soulsby

SRi has developed into more than ‘just’ a search and selection agency. Working in partnership with our clients we build out teams, assisting them to enter new sectors or markets and often develop completely new teams and offices. In the Asian region in particular, more than 75% of our placements over the last 24 months have been for newly created roles, reflecting the dynamic and changing environment of the sports industry within the region. However, building new teams in new regions brings its own set of practical and cultural challenges. Practical…read more
